Accommodation
Widely regarded as one of Africa’s finest camps, Greystoke Mahale sits on the western shoreline of Lake Tanganyika, surrounded by pristine forest and lapped by crystal water. Six open-fronted bandas and two luxury tents sleep just 18 guests at a time.
Completely solar-powered, with fresh water from the mountain springs, the camp is as eco-friendly as it is beautiful. Dhow sailing, kayaking, and swimming are all available directly from camp.
Operated by the Tanzania National Parks Authority, the park bandas offer clean, simple accommodation in permanent structures within the forest. A comfortable and affordable alternative to the luxury camps.
Each banda includes basic furnishings, mosquito nets, and shared ablution facilities. Bedding and meals can be arranged in advance with the park authorities. The setting is authentic and the proximity to nature is unbeatable at this price point.
For the most adventurous travellers, the Mahale public campsites offer a raw and unforgettable experience right on the lakeshore. Fall asleep to the sound of waves lapping the sand, with the Southern Cross blazing overhead.
Campers must bring their own equipment and food supplies. Fresh water is available at camp. The experience is simple, affordable, and utterly magical — perfect for self-sufficient adventurers.
