Travel Planning
Mahale is open year-round, but conditions vary significantly by season. Here’s everything you need to know to choose the right time for your visit.
Peak Season (Recommended)
Good Season
Wet / Low Season
The best time to visit. Dry trails, easy chimp tracking, calm lake, and clear skies. All camps are fully operational. Book well in advance — this is peak season.
Recommended
Warm and mostly dry. Excellent chimp trekking with fewer visitors than peak months. Good availability and sometimes lower rates.
Lush green forest, fewer tourists, and lower accommodation rates. Light afternoon showers rarely disrupt morning activities. Excellent bird watching.
Some camps close in April–May. Trails can be muddy and access difficult. But the forest is at its most dramatic and bird activity peaks. For adventurous travellers only.
Yellow fever vaccination is required. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Consult your doctor at least 6 weeks before travel. Bring high-factor sunscreen and insect repellent.
Neutral coloured clothing (green, khaki, brown) for trekking. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots. Binoculars, a camera, and a light rain jacket. Layers for cool mornings and evenings.
Most nationalities require a visa for Tanzania, obtainable on arrival or online in advance. Bring a yellow fever certificate. Keep passport copies and travel insurance documentation accessible.
The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency. US Dollars are widely accepted at camps. Credit cards are not accepted at Mahale — bring sufficient USD cash for tips and extras.
Mobile coverage is very limited or non-existent at Mahale. Satellite phones and limited WiFi are available at premium camps. Embrace the digital detox — it’s one of Mahale’s great gifts.
Charter flights from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Kigoma to Mahale’s Ntakata airstrip. The MV Liemba ferry from Kigoma is a scenic overland/lake option for the adventurous. Learn more.
