Frequently Asked Questions
Do you book tours or safaris?
No. We are an independent guide. Arrange your trip with one of the recognised operators listed across this site, who will handle permits, camps and internal flights for you.
How current is the information?
Guides are reviewed regularly, but park fees and schedules change. Always confirm current rates with the relevant park authority or your operator before travelling.
Can you recommend an operator?
The tour operators and safari companies listed on this site arrange trips in Mahale. Choose one that fits the season you want to travel in and your budget, then reach out to them directly.
How do I plan a Mahale trip?
Start with the guide to getting there, because the flights shape the rest of the itinerary, then read the best-time and cost guides.
Once you know which camp you want and roughly when, send the outline to an operator for a quote.
How many days do I need in Mahale?
Three nights is the usual minimum, which gives two mornings of chimpanzee trekking and leaves a spare attempt if the group has moved a long way inland.
Four nights adds a day on the lake without much extra cost, since the flights are already paid for. Our guide to how many days to spend goes through the trade-offs.
Is Mahale hard to reach from Kigoma?
It is a long way. The park lies well south of the town along the lakeshore, and our guide to the distance from Kigoma sets out the boat and flight options and how long each really takes.
